In addition, PREM can market RNG for RNG producers and help navigate and leverage environmental attributes such as Renewable Identification Numbers (RINS) and Low Carbon Fuel Standards (LCFS).

What is it?

Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) is biogas that has been upgraded for use in place of fossil natural gas.  The biogas used to produce RNG comes from a variety of sources including municipal solid waste landfills, wastewater treatment plants, livestock farms, food production facilities and organic waste management operations.

Uses and Advantages

  • RNG for Transportation

    RNG as CNG allows CNG powered vehicle fleets to operate at a lower cost per mile (as compared with diesel) and reduce tailpipe emissions without physical modifications required at the station or vehicle level.  Additional economic benefits apply in jurisdictions with low carbon fuel standard and renewable fuel standard.  PREM can secure RNG for fleet owners and CNG station owners as well as consult in the development of CNG stations.

  • RNG for Non-Transportation or “Voluntary Market” Applications:

    • Utilities

      Renewable Natural Gas can be used for power generation and can be a useful tool for power producing utilities to reduce their carbon footprint. In some areas of the United States and Canada utilities have made the commitment to clean renewable energy and have instituted RNG mandates where a certain percentage of natural gas purchases must be RNG. In areas without mandates, utilities are now allowed to pass through added costs of RNG to the rate base to provide their community with clean sustainable RNG.

    • Institutions with Carbon Reduction Goals

      The energy transition to renewable energy includes many publicly traded companies, universities and municipalities that have established carbon reduction goals. Fossil natural gas consumption is a main source of carbon emissions for many of these institutions. PREM has the unique ability to help these institutions use renewable natural gas to reduce overall carbon emissions.  PREM assesses energy in a portfolio approach and can determine what % of RNG would help meet carbon emission reduction goals. In addition, due to our extensive RNG market expertise, we can source feedstocks that provide the greatest carbon reduction at the most economical rates.
